On baking

So since I've recently had more spare time than I ever wanted, I've decided to start a full time baking company! Woo.
For the past two years, I've been doing a baking order business thing over Christmas time, which has actually kinda sucked. I mean, sure I get heaaps of money, but since it's all squashed into a two week period, it's always super stressful as well. Last year, this one woman ordered something like 74 lots of chocolates, which came to about 900 in all! Shit, that was lame.
But I think that even if it's stressful, it'll be worth it for the extra money :).
Anyway! I thought that on my catalogue, I could put up some fancy looking photos of my baking. So here are some photos of the baking that I thought might look impressive that I've done so far:

This is my chocolate caramel slice :) it's sooo good. But it makes me feel a bit ill after more than one :s.

Coconut lime cake... Yum yum.

So what do you think? On the photography and the like.. Do you think they look good enough to buy? Let me know!!

On the Diffiiculties of Fashion

I love fashion. Really, I do. I love looking at runway shows online, I love reading fashion blogs and magazines and I love love love shopping in fancy high-end stores.
The only bad part about this hobby, however, is that at times it fills me with a sense of dispair. It's just all so GORGEOUS buut... it's also v v expensive. Don't get me wrong, sometimes it's nice to have something to aspire to, but mostly I just wish I was rich enough to afford all those gorgeous pieces.
And the trouble is, the really beautiful stuff is all so unique, it's damn nigh impossible to find a similar piece for less.
For example, Armani Privé Spring '10 Couture:

See what I mean? So amazing and yet so unattainable.
So what to do to remedy this unfortunate situation?
Well, here are some tips to keep your spirits up in the face of fashion despair:
~Remember when looking at runway shows etc that it's not actually the garments that are important, it's the overall look and style that the designer is trying to convey -- so in the above example with Armani, the overall feel is ethereal and delicate, and it's up to you how to interpret that into your own look.
~Most of the time, you can find simple items with similar fabric etc in op shops and such, that you can customize so they resemble those coveted designer clothes or at least have a similar kind of feeling to it.
~The most important thing is that it's not the trends that are important, it's having your own sense of style. The thing to remember is that most of those clothes in expensive boutiques that you lust over often won't be fashionable any longer come next season, when you'll be lusting over some other piece. So, it's really more important to just find your own style and gather a wardrobe full of timeless pieces that you'll never get sick of and that you can rework each season to fit with the 'look' of that season.

Over and out,
Olivia
